O-ring for Bien-Air spray micromotor: Essential sealing component for the internal irrigation system

The O-ring is the primary wear part in the spray circuit of Bien-Air micromotors with internal irrigation. It ensures a watertight seal between the various components of the micromotor’s hydraulic circuit, preventing any water leakage between the water supply connection and the handpiece outlet.

What exactly is the role of the O-ring?

In internal spray (IR) micromotors, water flows through the micromotor body via a sealed circuit under low pressure. This circuit includes several mechanical joints where O-rings ensure a watertight seal. The seal compresses slightly during assembly to create a watertight barrier between the two parts it separates.

Over time, autoclave sterilization cycles (which involve repeated increases in pressure and temperature) as well as the removal and reinstallation of the handpiece gradually compress and deform the seal. Its sealing capacity decreases until it no longer functions properly.

How can you tell if the seal on your micromotor needs to be replaced?

  • Visible water leakage at the junction between the micromotor and the handpiece when the spray is activated.
  • Decreased spray flow: the water comes out with less force or in an irregular manner.
  • Traces of moisture on the micromotor body outside the normal spray outlet area.
  • Spray activates even when the handpiece is not properly attached (sign of lost pressure).

In all these cases, the seal must be replaced immediately. Continuing to use a micromotor with a faulty seal can cause water to seep into unprotected areas of the motor.
